Because it is a surgery, Dr. Alexander will recommend the anesthesia option that is best to keep you comfortable during the procedure. You should plan to have someone ready to drive you home after the procedure.  


    Depending on your treatment plan, the surgery steps generally include:


    1. Removing any damaged teeth.
    2. Bone grafting in your jaw. This will be needed if your jawbone is too thin or too soft to properly support the dental implant.
    3. Placing the implant in your jaw.
    4. Allowing time for healing. In this stage, your jawbone needs time to grow around the implant, providing the stability that will support speaking and chewing with your new tooth.
    5. Attaching your replacement tooth or teeth.

    After your surgery, you may need a prescription for painkillers or antibiotics, depending on your medical history and preferences. Painkillers, ice and rest will help you manage the soreness and swelling that follows surgery. Antibiotics will help prevent infection at the surgery site and allow your implant to properly heal.
